Christian Yap is riding a BAMBIKE at the Colombia Trail Masters Greater Outdoor Challenge.  The All-Terrain Bambike can be outfitted with fat knobby tires to handle the muddy trails.  Nuvali in Santa Rosa, Laguna, Philippines was an incredible venue for this event.  The trail run took us through mud pits, winding around tree-lined hilltops, and trudging through a river valley.  The bike trails traversed the rolling hills, including wheel spinning ascents and brake pumping descents, but most challenging were the countless muddy tracks, ruts and puddles.  We had a great time and look forward to the next race…

Last weekend we celebrated Gawad Kalinga’s annual Nation Building Expo at the Enchanted Farm village in Bulacan, Philippines.  The Enchanted Farm is a new strategy for rural social enterprise development and poverty eradication.  It is located on 14-hectares of beautiful countryside and is being developed as a social tourism destination, a team-building retreat, and a village university.

Bambike is constructing a new workshop on the Enchanted Farm. We will be training more GK villagers there to build Bambike frames and running a Bambike Rental Operation (BRO).  We built the skeleton of our bamboo StarDome last week, which will serve as the showroom for BRO’s rental bikes.  Dome structures are very resource efficient: they require the fewest amount of materials to create a maximum amount of space.  Ours is made out of bamboo slats and will be covered by a waterproof canvas.

After the StarDome is finished, the Bambike workshop structure is up next.  Stay tuned for updates…

The BamBeach Cruiser is almost ready to roll out….

The seat is a made from a custom handwoven rattan. It stays cool in the sun and allows for airflow while riding. The handlebars are free of wiring and are made of bamboo, reinforced with abaca fiber.

Philippine President Aquino was present to show his support for the Center for Social Innovation. He came up to the Bambike sidecar to check out the goods made by the other young social entrepreneurs. All of the goods are locally produced with organic and natural farming practices. The Bambike sidecar will serve as a vehicle to sell these goods and promote responsible consumerism.
